Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2-in-1 Review
The Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2 in 1 is a great addition to the Chrome OS laptops, seeking to improve user experience and contend with even the best Chrome OS laptops in the market such as the Pixelbook. If you are looking for a stylish Chromebook with an excellent display and great specs, Dell Inspiron might just have the answer for you.
Launched at the IFA 2018, It contains 8th generation Intel Core i3 processor, a 14-inch display and 128GB of eMMC storage and more. All these attributes place it high on the list above most other Chromebooks available today.
Even so, it is a bit heavy weighing around 3.99 pounds. In this article, we take a look at the Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2 in 1, also known as the Inspiron 7486, and see why it is ranked among the best Chromebooks in the market.
The Dell Inspiron Chromebook comes in an aluminum chassis that is similar to other Dell Inspiron Laptops. This already makes it able to challenge high-quality Windows devices and MacBooks in terms of quality as compared to cheaper Chromebooks that are made of plastic.
The aluminum case is highly resistant to fingerprints which helps maintain its clean, cool look. It measures 0.7 by 13 by 9.1 inches which is convenient for its 14-inch display. It is not necessarily thin, and it weighs about 3.99 pounds (1.81 Kgs) which is a bit heftier than other Chromebooks, even others that are large with 14-inch displays.
The 360-degree hinges are a bit stiff but they don’t creak. They hold the screen firmly in place. Furthermore, its weighty design ensures that it does not wobble when you type. The HD Webcam is rightly placed on top of the display and functions well but is affected by low light. The display is also not borderless and allows you to hold the edges when you are using it as a tablet.
Underneath the front right side of the Inspiron 7486 device, you find an inbuilt storage for your pen although the pen is not spring loaded and you will have to use the ridge on its back to pull it out with your fingernails. The pen is a bit smaller than regular Chromebook pens but it works just fine. If you prefer larger pens, you can always use third-party ones.
On the left side of the device, you will find a 3.5 mm combo audio jack, a USB Type-C 3.1 port where you plug in the charger adapter and a regular USB Type-A 3.1 port. On the right side, you find a micro-SD card slot, the power button, another USB Type-C 3.1 port which you can also use for charging and a volume rocker.
All in all, design-wise, the Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2 in 1 fare competitively with other top Chromebooks and high-end Windows device and Macbooks.
Specs and features
The Inspiron 7486 specs are some of the best we have seen in Chromebooks. They make it suitable to function both as a tablet and a laptop seamlessly. Let’s take a comprehensive look at what it contains;
The Dell Inspiron Chromebook is equipped with 8th gen Core i3-8130U (4MB Cache, up to 3.40GHz) processor, which for a Chromebook is really good. This makes it one of the smoothest and fastest Chromebooks there is.
While there are Chromebooks loaded with Core i5 and Core i7 processors, the Core i3 processor in the Dell Inspiron Chromebook is plenty enough for you to use efficiently without loading time. Apps open swiftly and you can switch between without any lagging.
The RAM is also a contributing factor to the great performance with a 4GB DDR4 RAM. This makes it easier and efficient for gaming also. The device has Android applications integration through the Google Play Store and Android games that are demanding play smoothly in the device at high frame rates. Other Android apps like Photoshop also run smoothly. Again there are Chromebooks with more than 4GB ram, 4GB is enough for you to work with smoothly.
The Display is also top notch and is one of the best displays in any Chromebook. It has a full HD (1920 x 1080) native resolution and uses an IPS “TrueLife” LED panel. The IPS panel reaches a brightness of about 320 nits.
It has excellent color and an accurate pen and touch input and you won’t have problems with pen tracking. The bezels around the display area are larger than expected though I don’t think anyone would mind.
The device has an internal storage of 128GB which is great for such devices. If you are into watching series and downloading Android Applications you will probably have a lot of space for all that and more.
The keyboard is a standard chiclet-style, backlit keyboard. There is not much to it, though it will serve all your needs and the backlight is advantageous if you find yourself in low light situations.
As advertised by dell, the battery life lasts about 10 hours which is not bad, compared to other Chromebooks. Battery life, however, as usual, varies differently depending on what you are doing on the device but an average of 9 to 10 hours isn’t that bad.
The price of the Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2 in 1 originally ranged around $599. While it might be a bit on the high side compared with other Chromebooks, considering the internal hardware and the features it contains it might be a worthy buy. Amazon has this offer on and you can buy the device for about $448 saving $151 dollars from the original price.
The Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2 in 1 is a great device and could check most of the right boxes in many peoples lists. Its performance ranks it high up on the Chromebook list, and even after factoring in the price, it can still be considered a worthy buy. The large display is exciting especially since the color is rich. hence an excellent choice for watching movies.
The boot time is also great. The device boots up in about 6 seconds just giving you an insight of how the rest of the performance would be. Chrome OS integration with Android makes it all the more convenient. While there could be a few things that could use improvement, the Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2 in 1 is definitely worth checking out.
